ANNA MARX JOINS HEBREW FREE LOAN SOCIETY OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA AS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Hebrew Free Loan Society of Greater Philadelphia (HFL) proudly welcomes Anna Marx as the organization’s new Executive Director, following the retirement of longtime Executive Director Cheryl Barish Erlick.
“Anna comes to HFL at a critical time in our organization’s nearly 40-year history. Thanks to Cheryl’s tireless efforts to raise community awareness about the loan resources available from HFL, loan requests have nearly doubled,” said Board President Amy Krulik. “Anna’s extensive experience in organizational design, fundraising, and leadership development will help us grow the size of our loan program to meet increasing demand for support, expand the geographic scope of our work beyond the Philadelphia and South Jersey region, and amplify our fund development and marketing efforts. We are confident that Anna is the right leader, with the right skill set, at the right time, for HFL.”
Anna Marx is currently the principal and founder of Anna Marx Consulting LLC, where she serves nonprofit organizations and small businesses in strategy, operations, evaluation, and team development. Previously, Anna served as Chief Strategy Officer and later Co-Interim Executive Director at Jewish Learning Venture in Philadelphia, Project Director of Shinui: The National Network for Innovation in Part-Time Jewish Education, and Project Manager at the Union for Reform Judaism and The Jewish Education Project. She holds two master’s degrees from NYU: MA, Hebrew and Judaic Studies, and MPA, Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy.
“I am honored to take on this role for an organization that has served so many in our community,” Anna said. “As a former loan recipient myself from Hebrew Free Loan San Francisco, I know first-hand the impact that these interest-free loans can have on individuals in our community. Not only did our loan help us in school, but that loan ultimately brought me here today to be able to further serve my community. The love and support I received as part of the process left a permanent and positive mark for my family that we have carried with us ever since.”
Anna is married to Cantor Jamie Marx (Temple Sholom in Broomall) and together, with their two children, live in Wynnewood, PA.
Founded in 1984, the Hebrew Free Loan Society of Greater Philadelphia helps Philadelphia area residents with temporary financial need by offering no interest, no fee loans for education, fertility treatments, medical expenses, home repairs, building start-ups, adoption and many other areas of support. Since our founding, we have made more than 2,000 loans totaling over $3 million. The work of HFL is based on the Biblical injunction “If you lend money to My people, to the poor among you, do not act towards them as a creditor; exact no interest from them.” (Exodus 22:24) HFL is a proud member of the International Association of Jewish Loans.
