Welcome to Mishpatim Week where we will be sharing d’vrei torah (insights from this text), impact stories, and visiting synagogues around the area. We’ll share meaningful insights from Parshat Mishpatim, exploring its implications and teachings on how we can support one another in accordance with our traditions.

Parshat Mishpatim urges us to see each other as community members, not transactional customers. This perspective is crucial as it changes how we interact and support one another.

Rabbi David Glanzberg-Krainin of Beth Sholom Congregation provides a deep reflection on the importance of community-mindedness, citing Rashi’s interpretation of “among you” in Exodus 22:24. He notes, “Rashi says these words are meant to remind us that our individual financial circumstances could dramatically change. None of us is immune from causes of poverty—illness, war, recession, displacement can happen to any of us—and we must recognize the humanity of those in need because they, too, are created in the divine image.” (Read the full post here.)

Echoing this sentiment, Rabbi David Rosenn, CEO of HFLS New York, emphasizes that by refusing to charge interest, we signal to our borrowers that they are part of a community of neighbors helping neighbors—not just customers.

At HFL, we prioritize the dignity and humanity of each individual. Before we enter into any agreements, we listen to their stories, offer reassurance, and provide support. Jesse, one of our borrowers, shared, “HFL was quick, caring, and supportive, which is why we’re able to carry on today without worry.”
