How Our Work Impacts Lives: Community Stories
A Journey Through Adversity to Joy
When E’s partner was diagnosed with breast cancer, the shock was compounded by the news that they had a limited window to pursue IVF if they wanted to have biologically related children. Thanks to a swift and compassionate response from HFL, they were able to secure a loan that funded their IVF treatments before cancer therapy commenced. We are thrilled to report that they now have a healthy, delightful baby. “We were ushered through a considerate and efficient loan process…we would not have been able to do it without the loan,” shares E.
Dreams Fulfilled
A single mother by choice shares her gratitude: “Thanks to HFL for making my dream of becoming a mother come true. The fertility loan allowed me to become a single mother and we could not be happier. Penelope (5 months) is the light of my life and every day is the best gift!
Finding Safety and Security
Allison came to HFL toward the end of her abusive marriage. After being turned away from many resources, HFL stepped in to help her afford essential legal protections. “Getting the loan with HFL was a gentle and easy process.” You can read Allison’s story in her own words and read about how her story inspired a loan program for domestic abuse survivors in the Jewish Exponent.
How Our Work is Possible: Stories of Philanthropy
A Story of Compassion and Commitment
One of our dedicated donors was introduced to HFL by a family member and was immediately impressed by the organization’s effective use of funds and impactful programs. Though she has never personally needed a loan, her deep empathy for those in financial distress moved her to action. “I have been very blessed, and that’s why I give. Witnessing the stress that financial burdens cause, I saw how even a modest sum could dramatically change circumstances,” she shared.
Her commitment extends beyond a single contribution; she has chosen to specifically aid borrowers who have repaid at least 50% of their loans, thus reinforcing a cycle of responsibility and empowerment. To date, she paid off loans for more than 50 families.
“Seeing the direct effect of my support on others’ lives makes me feel very good,” she noted.
Garrett’s Journey to Philanthropy
Garrett was unfamiliar with HFL until he received an email that piqued his curiosity. The concept of interest-free lending struck a chord with him, reminding him of his father’s struggles with financial dependence. “There have been times in my life when I had to rely on loans, and I understand the difference an interest-free option can make,” he explained.
Now retired and recently widowed, Garrett is focusing on increasing his philanthropic efforts, hoping to honor his late wife’s family legacy and teach his children the importance of giving back. He shared, “Every email reminder from HFL prompts a contribution from me.”
Alan and Carolyn Lindy’s Legacy of Support
Alan and Carolyn Lindy’s commitment to HFL is deeply rooted in Alan’s family’s history of facilitating opportunities for others. Reflecting on his grandfather, whose actions during WWII guaranteed the safe passage of 12 Jewish families to the United States, Alan stated, “I believe in helping people help themselves. At HFL, it’s about providing that critical opportunity for a more equal playing field.” This historical act of kindness has inspired Alan to continue supporting initiatives that empower individuals and communities.
